Artist: Adam Gard. Photo: Mike Peck. This piece was inspired by an actual tornado touch down on Memorial Day 1996. The tornado struck at 10:40 p.m. in a neighborhood when many people were away on a Holiday weekend. |
I
toured the area at sunrise the following morning and saw a path of
destruction that was devastating, houses were lifted off their
foundations and moved several feet, debris was hanging from the
trees everywhere, people were meandering about completely
despondent and in total shock at the sight. A total of 15 homes were
completely destroyed and had to be rebuilt, while another 85 were
seriously damaged .... miraculously no lives were lost, only one lady
required an overnight stay in a hospital.
Several weeks later, while traveling down a country road, I gazed at a
farmhouse in the distance and envisioned a huge tornado descending
down upon the tranquillity of this country scene. Later, I described the
setting to one of our artists, Adam Gard, who sat down during a lunch
break and captured the moment perfectly in a "doodled-out" sketch.
We knew, at that very moment, that we would have to take the time to
pursue it.
The piece is done in Kokomo, Spectrum and a little Bullseye glass,
copper foiled with the lines patinated black. The red oak frame is our
own custom bullnose profile with Golden Oak stain and polyurethane. |
