"The Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth," 1997. 84"x 36". Restored window from The Loretto, Kansas City, Missouri. Restored by Mike Peck, Gary Smith, and Adam Gard.

This tragically vandalized window sits in The Loretto, a 100 year old Catholic convent and private school in Kansas City, before being commissioned to us for restoration. The building and the grounds are now being completely renovated by the Missouri Historical Society as well as funds donated by private parties. As seen in the "before" picture, the entire upper bodies of the main characters were missing, and many of the surrounding background pieces were broken. We began by researching The Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth to understand what the original artist was trying to convey. We contacted the Mayer Studio, who were originally commissioned in 1905 to do the window, but, were advised that all plans or pictures of the original work had long been discarded. Then, with the help of the IGGA and Albert Lewis, we were referred to Julie Sloan of McKernan Satterlee Associates and author of the well known book, Conservation of Stained Glass. Ms Sloan was familiar with the Mayer Studio and was able to provide us with pictures of their work from churches in Tennessee and Georgia that also depicted The Visitation. With this, we were able to reconstruct the pattern, using some artistic freedom, and restore the window as close as possible to its original state. Most of the glass used for this restoration was Blenko, with some FNA and GNA, and paints used were Reusche.
