Residential work, 1993. 10'x 4'. Leah and Dick Le Cates Residence, Nantucket, CT. Photograph. Art Baltrotsky. The grapevine design was chosen specifically for the Greek architectural design of the home and to suit the taste of the owner, who is of Greek descent. Five different colors were chosen for the leaves and two different colors for the grapes, as this window is then bordered in bevels to enhance its elegant surroundings. This 10'x 4' window is not exposed to outside light and competes with two other windows at either side that give onto a spectacular view of Assawoman Bay. Since the lighting is in the niche in the wall, measures had to be taken to enable the owners to change the lightbulbs. A door was therefore constructed that could be opened periodically for that purpose. The 9"x 10" square of glass close to the bottom center of the window is that door. It is surrounded by U-shaped lead, is hinged and is provided with a hook on the opposite side. Rebar is soldered to the window above and below it to provide extra support when the door is opened.
