Christ Church Cathedral Chapel, Louisville, KY. 1985-1986. Charles Raith, Architect. 3'6"x 7'0". Because the chapel is directly adjacent to the sanctuary of the Cathedral, which has a large ensemble of windows by Tiffany, it was important to continue the traditional and provide a figure window for the chapel, which was a recent addition. The theme of the universal duality of Christ is expressed by the superimposition of two figures, a Gothic sculpture and a dancer. The sculptural figure is painted in black paint, which is opaque during the day, while the dancer is painted in white, which is reflective at night under artificial light. This theme of contrast is also expressed in the spontaneous blue gestures and the white ornamental pattern, both of which are used as backgrounds. The clerestory windows are composed of the same blue background and white ornamental pattern, but the central area of those four windows is of beveled glass with the pattern painted onto the flat surface.
