"Impressions," 3" long by 3/4" wide, 1997. Collection of "Contemporary Reflections."

Fused dichroic glass, freeform wire-wrapped, hung from a leather chain. Each of Niederhaus' wearable sculptures uses dichroic glass developed by NASA. They are created by layering minutely thin layers of various metal oxides onto a piece of glass, which is then put into a vacuum chamber. Because of this technique, the colors are brilliantly clear and bright. They also change to a completely different color when viewed at a 45-degree angle. Unlike stained glass, dichroic glass does not have to be backlit in order to enjoy its full color and beauty because of its innately brilliant colors. Each sculpture Niederhaus makes is unique, using different colors and wire-wrapping each time. Her sculptures can be displayed, worn as a necklace, or used as an unusual Christmas tree ornament. Due to the availability and the popularity of dichroic glass, colors will vary in each sculpture according to available glass colors. Each set sells for $80, including stand – if you order, state whether pierced, post or clip earrings to match are wanted. Each is also provided with a leather cord to use the sculpture as a necklace.
