Hi everyone,

I just would like to welcome everyone to this new mailing list.

The purpose for this group is to discuss anything related to doing stained
glass (ie: procedures, techniques, questions and information). The requests
for changes, additions and deletions should go to glass-request@bungi.com.
Submissions to the list should go to glass@bungi.com. The actual names on
the mailing list are confidential, and will not be posted - in other words,
if *you* don't mail anything to the list, no one will know that you are
lurking in the shadows watching the mail go by...

I have started doing stained glass about 6 months ago. I really enjoy it
but I'm not thrilled with some of the prices that glass sells for. I have
only one supplier so far (by mail order). Anyone have any competitive
suppliers I could try?

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy this list.

Glenna

I've been creating some patterns using CorelDRAW 5.
It seems to be working great. You can adjust the
line thickness so when you have the printout blown
up the line thickness matches the lead came heart
thickness perfectly. I have also scanned some patterns
out of books and traced over the bitmaps in Corel so
they are now vectorized, but I`m not sure about the
ethics of distributing those files. Anyway, I have
some patterns and I will do request as long as I retain
the rights to the patterns 8). Maybe we could decide on
a format for pattern distribution. My vote would be for
some vectorized format (for the thickness thing) like
windows-meta file (.wmf ?). I realize not everyone has
CorelDRAW so that format is probably out. I could export
them as .bmp or .gif but I would need to know how much you
plan on enlarging them to fix the line thickness. gif or bmp
formats are fun because you can bring them into a paint program
and play with colors for your pattern......

Those are my ideas...any other opinions,

I've got a big list of US suppliers; email majordomo@selune.demon.co.uk
with

get glass lists/suppliers.txt

or

get glass lists/suppliers.ps

to get the ASCII or Postscript versions, respectively.

Hmm. Postscript is probably worth considering - that would
work reasonably well via mail, if you use the ASCII version.
(I've got a files-by-mail server set up). I don't think
.wmf includes size information, and it's probably binary, as
well, which would mean we'd either need an ftp site or have
to use uuencode/decode to ship it by mail.

If you'd like to contribute patterns, please feel free to
ftp them to daver.bungi.com (204.119.71.2). Please place
them in /pub/incoming/glass. Files will be available in
the /pub/glass directory.

          Hi,
I received the mail on how to get the list of U.S. mail-order
suppliers for stained glass supplies, and have sent a request to
get it (I hope I did it right), but this makes me wonder a few
things...How accurate are the catalogues when depicting colours
                    of glass?
What size sheets will they ship?
How do they package the glass for shipment?
What are peoples' experiences with receiving glass this
way? (ie. is it usually intact, or broken?)
Do U.S. suppliers ship to Canada?
Does anyone know of any Canadian sources?

I have been doing stained glass (copper foil) for about 10 years,
but I have always bought my supplies locally. I think it would
be a bit odd to buy glass by mail-order as I often spend lots of
time looking through sheets of the "same colour" to find exactly
the sheet (or specific part of a sheet) that I want.
Maybe people just buy all the other stuff by mail-order and buy
          glass locally?
But having never seen any of these catalogues I am now wondering
if I have been paying too much for my supplies, so I am
interested in getting one or two to do a bit of comparing.

          Any comments welcome.

          Carol-Ann

Hi Carol-Ann;

I have only ever bought glass through the mail on one occasion.
I ordered a sample box (12 - 12" x 12" sheets) of Armstrong glass.
I was not thrilled with the colors. I also ordered a sample
box of Spectrum glass....this I was very satisfied with.
The box was about $35.00 each. I found this to be definately
cheaper. They were shipped via UPS and came packed very well
in bubble wrap and styro. peanuts. The only supplier I have is
US.
Good luck.

I will start this message with an apology for any lapses in
ettiquette, as I am new to email.
I am a professional lamp shade maker with about 15 years of
experience. I started with simplepanel lamps, went to the
Worden style and currently use only Odyssey for my re-sale
pieces. All my works are signed and numbered and my current
number is 1015, yes that is one thousand and fifteen units.
Ihave been teachibng classes in lamps for about 13 years,
with all beginning students starting with a simple panel
lamp. I will be willing to answer questions put to me, and will gladly poffer and will offer suggestions on doing business, both pricing
work for sale and buying supplies. Living on the Oregon
Coast puts me 3 hors from Portland and access to two of the
best hand casters of glass in the world. Considering the labor
in a "Tiffany" the extra cost of the art glass is only a
small increase of the overall cost of the lamp using a
less expensive machine made glass.
As for supplies, most mail order suppliers catering to
casual or retail users are geared for small purchases.
If any of you are trying to go "Pro" before most
wholesalers will send catalogs and or prices, you will
need a resale license or number, and may have to place a
large order to start. I may be able to find specific retail
shops near you if you ask.
Perhaps in the next tome I can touch on the aspect of
dealing with galleries, stores and other outlets as
a selling or consigning artist.
Although the email address is erubin, PLEASE, be advised
that I am Howard Rubin, just using my wife's address
at this time.

Hi all,
My daughter's boyfriend and I recently purchased a bandsaw
together and we would like to know if it harms the blade to leave water
in contact with it (through the sponges) for several days without use.
Also, we are experimenting with various types of double-sided tape for
patterns. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Could anyone offer some advice about how to repair/replace a cracked
glass peice in a copperfoil lampshade. My lampshade is composed of 4
triangular panels, so I am able to lay one side flat. When breaking
out a cracked peice, how does one avoid cracking adjacent peices? Is
there a time when you say forget it and leave a cracked glass?

I just fixed a lamp a couple of weeks ago. It was quite easy.

1) Score the cracked piece several times in a cross-hatched direction,
several lines a 1/4" apart and then repeat perpendicular to the first set.
   (an old cutter works well)
2) Tap the piece to break the glass and then continue tapping to remove most
of the center of the piece. A pair of needle nose pliers usually helps
to remove the pieces. Now you are left with a hole with chards of glass
around the outside still soldered to the adjacent pieces.
3) Remove the solder around the broken piece by heating the solder with your
iron and letting it run or "flicking it off". I covered the rest of the
lamp with newspaper so that I didn't get solder over the rest of the lamp.
4) Using the pliers you should be able to remove the remaining pieces. You
may have to use the iron to heat the remaining solder and at the same time
pull the piece out. In some cases the glass comes out and the foil stays.
You should be trying to remove the foil for the broken piece and leave
the foil from the adjacent pieces intact. When you are done, there should
   be a nice clean hole.
5) Cut a replacement piece and fit it into the hole and then foil it and fit
it again. Solder the piece as you would normally do.

Ciao,
Deb

May I add to the previous advice:
Keep you soldering iron on the foil that is being removed and be
VERY careful on adjacent pieces where there is a foil overlap.
When you are soldering in a new piece, remember that you have nice
rolled seams on the "done" part of the lamp, so the piece you lay in
(if you are laying it on a surface) will probably NOT lay even with
the other pieces and you may need to lay a piece of cardboard under
the new glass piece to lift it.
Good luck.

 Suppliers 2/23/95 1:55 PM

Hi,
I have just requested the supplier list, so I don't know if the following sources are on it or not. I don't currently have the phone numbers for them, so if I find they are not on the list I will try to bring them in. I believe they all have 800 numbers so you can probably get them from the 800 information. I have ordered from each of the following and have been pleased with the service. None of them requires any special business information to receive their discount prices.

Warner-Crivellaro (sp??) - cheapest source of supplies for most stained glass applications.

Hudson Glass - If they don't have it at Warner, the next best price. Sometimes even better if you are putting together a large order since you get an added percentage off discount as amount ordered increases.

Delta Glass - Nice color catalog. They have a color chart and say call them and describe the color your looking for. Also carry some beadmaking and fusing supplies. Prices not as good as those above.

Most of the above, if not all, offer 1-800 help/advice on stained glass in general.

I also have catalogs from Glass Crafters and Sunshine Glass. Their prices don't seem any better than my local stained glass store. However, they do have an item or two that I didn't find in the other catalogs, so it is worth getting them.

As far as ordering glass through mail order, I tried it once and all came through fine. Prices were very good. I ordered a sample, and overall did not think it was that great, mostly because the colors that I really liked, I already had, and the others were not what I generally would have chosed. But, when I purchase glass without a definite use in mind, I tend to go for really pretty colors, and forget those browns and grays, etc. that I quite often need. #002#In the long run, I'm sure I will find a use for it. Next time I will order specific colors, or, get a theme package, like spring, flowers, blues (available through WC).

That's all for now.
Rachael

It would take more time than I have to fully address the color
choosing of glass, however, for a fairly good choice of cheap
machine made glass, with a large and consistant color selection,
Spectrum is a good choice. It pays to get a sample box or
ask a distributor for specific colors. Their iridescent colors
are fairly consistant and you can usually match colors at a
future time if yoy find something you want to keep using.
Use their numbering system whenever possible, as the
wholesalers factory order by those numbers. Some of the retailers
use their set of numbers, but can convert spectrum numbers to
their numbers. When it comes to hand cast glass, the factory
sheets may be close to 6 square feet, and the sample you get
is very small, around 6 to 8 square inches. The whole sheet
may not contain any of the colors that the small sample may
have. If you can take the whole sheet, and ask for the color
mix with the most of the sheet with the color that you want.
When I factory choose, it takes hours to find the right ones.
Order pickers will usually grab the first sheet in the bin.
I do not deal with the retailers of product for the trade,
but can and do order from major wholesalers. You need a resale
license or number, and usually have to order large amounts
or standard packs. If you have a place that gives you good
service and what you want, the price should be secondary.
Again, I probaly can answer most questions specifically
related to lamps and associated type things... so feel
free to ask. I usually check the mail twice a day, and
if there are answers that are accurate, I will not add to
the clutter on the screen.

I think I said one company was Delta Glass. I meant to say Delphi Glass. Don't know if there is a Delta or not. I just got the supplier list from majordomo, and all of the places I suggested are listed.

Hi all,

I live about an hour away from Delphi Glass in Lansing, MI and have
been there a
number of times as well as having used their mail order service. They
are always helpful, courteous and prompt. I have never been
disappointed with them. From what I can tell, their prices are reasonable
on most items and they have some good deals on their sale flyers. Hope
that helps.

For those looking for mail order catalogs:

Anything in Stained Glass (New Jersey) 800-467-1207
Delphi Glass (MI) 800-248-2048
Franklin Art Glass (OH) 800-484-7683
Glass Crafters (FL) 800-422-4552
Warner Crivellaro (PA) 800-523-4242
Whitmore Durgin (MA) 800-262-1790
Vic's Crafts 800-322-vics

These are a few of many retail sources. I've had good experiences with
service and safe arrivals from Warner-Crivellaro, Delphi, Glass
Crafters, and Anything in Stained Glass. I also have numbers for some
wholesalers, but no personal experience with any orders from them.
Will post or email if anyone is interested. This is my first experience
with mailing lists. I have read lots of messages on news groups
regarding the appropriate use of "ads," but am still unclear if posting
information such as the above is ok? If not, please let me know.

This number is not valid.

This number should be 800-848-7683

> Vic's Crafts 800-322-vics

This number is correct, but it isn't Vic's crafts, and they don't sell
stained glass supplies.

I apologize for any inconvenience caused by my posting. Some errors
have been pointed out to me. The correct number for Anything in
Stained Glass is 800-462-1209. The correct number for Vic's Crafts is
800-332-vics. I have actually called them to verify. The errors were
due to my inadvertently using an old (and clearly inaccurate!) file,
which I have since destroyed. Thanks, Steve, for your very complete
posting of suppliers, which I've just received! Peggy

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any helpful tips on soldering
a piece that is 15" in diameter. How can one get the
circle snug. I have tried using the horseshoe nails but
find that when I try to get the pieces to fit snug that they
start to buckle and the project gets uneven.
In the class I took we worked with a square edged piece and
we used small 2 x 2 boards around the edges to get everything
lined up.

Hi Glenna,
IUf you have access to woodworking equipment, an accurate 15
inch circle can be cut out, and use the hole for your frame.
Another option is to a half circle out of window glass, again
using the 15 inch diameter, fit foil and tack solder the pieces
a few at a time, remove the half circle, provide some stops
with nails, and then use the half circle for the lower half
of the window. If you are going to frame the finished piece,
the accuracy of the circle only needs to be enough to be
hidden by the lip of the frame.

I am interested in making clear beveled glass candle boxes and I need a
source for beveled glass supplies (initially small quantities and
possibly larger quantities later).

I am new here, I hope this is the right address.

         Thanks,
                 Betty

Hi Betty,

You might want to try Warner Crivellaro. I saw some in their
catalogue. You can order a catalogue by calling them at
1-800-523-4242.

Although I do not have a supplier to give you, I do have a
suggestion for when you work with bevels. I f you are doing
copper foil and intend to use black patina for finish on the
solder, the use of black backed foil will prevent the copper
from showing through at tht edges of the foil, Please forgive
me if I have offered asuggestion that was to basic.

Hi all,
I ordered some beveled glass from Wittemore-Durgin on January 6.
They charged my credit card immediately. I still do not have the
shipment and have called them several times. I would not recommend that
you purchase beveled glass from them.

When I do a circular project, the only real solution is extremely
careful cutting and judicious grinding. If you've done that well
then you shouldn't need to shove pieces together. Lay out carefully,
flux the joins around the outside, check to make sure nothing moved.
Line up everything again, if you need to, then tack the outside pieces
carefully, checking often to make sure you've moved nothing. Then you
can tack the rest of the piece. I suppose you could make pieces that
would fit inside a wooden embroidery hoop, which would hold things
well. but limit you in the sizes you create.

Dorothy,

Thanks for your reply. I just assumed that the project had to
be very tight when soldering. The square piece that I previously
did in class was pressed together quite tight. The circle I did
does line up very well, so I guess I'll just tack it the best
possible.
Thanks.

I have found the best way to solder a circular project is to use aluminum head
push pins i use them for all my odd shaped projects.

Thanks for your tip. I ended up using horseshoe nails with
quite a good results.
