Greatly enjoyed reading the article about your glass plating instruction
from Robert Oddy @
http://www.robertoddy.com/Articles/CommonGroundFall97.html. Thanks for
introducing me to Robert Oddy's work - unbeleivable.

I just have one question, What is bungi? Can't find any reference in
various dictionaries. Found references to 'bungian' including your article
on the internet, but no real explanation.

Thanks!

Hi! Jerry,

Welcome to Bungi. I am one of the members. Bungi is a web site dedicated to
people who work with Stained Glass. I have been a member for about 3yrs. now.
If you work with glass and you have a question just post it and you'll get
several responses to your question. The people here are really nice and willing
to help. It doesn't matter if you are a new comer or have been doing glass
for a long time. It's been quiet lately. People are the busiest during the
winter months.

Keep coming back,

Hi,

I have just finished soldering a small window panel. I had done the
leading up well - all the joins were great. It was the first serious
project I had attempted and I was very pleased. Then the problems started
when I began soldering. I first.tested the iron on some scraps of lead
and it seemed to be OK. After I had soldered the second side however I
noticed with some dismay that the iron must have been too hot because on
some of the joins tiny holes appeared to have been eaten away from the
sides of the lead where the solder was. I checked the tip (the iron is a
Weller 100D) and it was an 8 - I have since found out that a 7 would have
been better. I feel a little down now as my almost perfect panel has been
let down by poor soldering - but I think I should give myself a break as I
am a beginner !! Anyway, does anyone know if the slight melting of the
leads at the sides of a few joins is a problem or will be a problem?

Cheers,
Wendy

Hi Wendy..

It's a fairly common problem.. there are all sorts of variables that
enter into the lead soldering process.. such as the alloy of the lead,
the size of the lead, the alloy of the solder, the flux, and of course..
the heat of the soldering iron tip, and how long it was on the joint.
Over time, with more hands on experience, you'll begin to improve your
soldering technique, you'll find the right "feel" for the process.

But your shrinkage of the lead at the joints, probably doesn't really
lessen the strength of the panel, and I'll suggest that once you've
puttied the panel, and cleaned up all of the excess putty, and brushed
it all done very well.. you probably will be the only person who will be
able to spot those minor errors.

I wouldn't sweat it.. really.. from my own personal experience.. I
know there are times when you just have to say.. "well, that's how it
turned out", and leave it at that. While we'd all love to do perfect
work all of the time, you have to remember that this is an art form..
and I'd suggest that rather than obsessing on those joints, you finish
up the panel, and move on to the next panel that you want to create!
You'll do the best you can to not make the same mistakes, but surely
you'll make others.. it's a learning curve that stays with us all.

So, don't fret about it.. as long as the panel's joints are sound,
even if they're not all that aesthetic, and the panel is properly
puttied.. I doubt there will be any problems with the panel. Move on..
look forward in your chosen media, and just keep working on it!

  Peace -Gerry, IGGA

Thank you, Wendy and Gerry, for this dialog on soldering and perfection. =
I am a
beginner, and am finally beading a Tiffany lamp that I started eight =
years ago.
I put it away when I got frustrated with cutting bumpy, layered lamp =
glass that
had a mind of its own, then bought a Taurus Ring Saw last summer and =
carried on.
I had this vision in my mind of doing a perfect job; now that I am =
beading the
outside of the lamp and having trouble making it perfect my dreams of =
perfection
have been dashed! Your dialog has come just at the right time, and is =
the "pep
talk" I needed.

Thanks again,
Janet

I think the question being asked is 'What is the meaning of the name
"Bungi"? ' Something myself have wondered off and on for all the years I
have been a member of this wonderful group. So could anyone enlighten us?
Thanks.

By the way - A late belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.
My studio is back up and running following the fire that destroyed
everything. Seems like I still turn around at least once a day looking for
some tool or piece of glass I no longer have. I've replaced enough to be
working on a couple of new commissions though.

Looking forward to getting involved in the bungi glass community again.

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone for the advice on soldering. I haven't replied
personally to everyone but I really have appreciated everyone's kind and
helpful words. I am over the moon at my first effort - I never dreamed I
could put 52 pieces of glass together with any success. I have to keep
rushing out to look at it to remind myself I did it. Anyway, thanks
again.

Regards,
Wendy

Dear Bungi friend,=20

I have used the Weller 100, and they claim an internal thermostat control =
however I have found that it doesn't work well for leaded glass. May I suggest =
that what ever iron you choose you also invest in a thermostat control device. =
Of course I am going to tell you that Glastar makes the best but what ever you =
choose a thermostat control will improve you level of temperature control to a =
smaller variance and prevent this type of problem. Good Luck!=20

Thank you,=20

from an experienced solderer......

use a HOT IRON and move quickly...IMHO most of the irons are not enough at
the tip, but do prove adequate if not time effective.
do not go back and forth like you are painting,,,,,,it only confuses the
solder

If there is a lot of oxidation on the foil it makes it a lot harder to run
an unbroken bead.......use a plastic pot scrubber to bring up new copper, of
course being careful not to tear the foil.

it takes practice to learn to run a clean bead.......

h as an aside (tout here) I have some lamp stuff and glass strips on
ebay.....here is one link...then check out my other auctions:

ah, good question! and also wanted to wish all a merry christmas and happy
new year! its been a long while since i've posted, almost as long as it has
been since i've done glass work. finished my peacock window and it turned out
fab! i can't seem to get a good pic of it as it keeps turning out looking
purple instead of the beautiful cobalt blue and green that it is...anyway, will
post a pic when i can get a good one. moving in a few months, bought a house
with a garage and a work room already built! can hardly wait to get my
operation out of the basement and into its own place for a change!!! anyway, what the

I have cut the glass for a 5x7 picture frame. When I lay it out it

looks fine until I put on the channel. The channel shows through the

glass. Do I need to cut the clear glass a differently (larger or

smaller). Or is there something else that I need to do to fix this?

Dear N.,

I don't have a mental picture of what you are doing but if I think I understand =
what you are saying, just grouting the piece would solve the problem. Maybe =
you had not intended to grout the piece. You could use two pieces of single =
strength glass and some clear silicon seal, or you might consider the copper =
foil method. Good Luck!

Thank you,=20

Dear owner of the wonderful Bungi glass list,

=20

Can something be done about the level and content of spam? I truly enjoy
reading of others work and accomplishments. It is a thrill to hear of a
project that turned out even better than the artist expected. I enjoy
looking at a picture of completed projects that have a link to view. =
The
questions that are asked, along with replies, are truly insightful. They =
are
a pleasure to read. But I must say I don't look forward to seeing
advertisements that are promoting sexual products, refinancing scams. =
Can
something be done? Can a filter be placed on the list? Can the messages =
be
moderated, or just plain rejected from non list members?

=20

Once again I do truly enjoy what the list has to offer and feel others =
might
enjoy it more if there was less spam.

=20

Sincerely,

=20

David =20
