I know many of you are starting in on your
Christmas sales, which usually involve lots of
little ornaments and suncatchers. When I'm not
crafting I work at Michael's craft store, and
virtually all of our seasonal merchandise is
coming in bubble wrap pouches that are just
perfect for packing up those little goodies. If
you talk to your local store's manager, he'd most
likely let you have all the bubble wrap you care
to hang around to gather. The pouches range
from about 3" square up to maybe 12" square, and
then the larger stuff comes in sheets of bubble
wrap. I get a whole year's worth of wrap out of
one aisle's worth of product (of course, I don't
do much glass, mostly jewelry these days). You
do have to show up on a truck day to get it
though, as Michael's trash compacts their boxes
as they go.

I use the flux brushes and reuse them as long as I don't leave them in the
flux dish. When they get rusty from not being rinsed off I throw them out.

I would think a Q-tip would take a lot of time and don't think that's
necessary. Just be sure to wash off the flux every time you're finished.
I've only had flux ruin a project when I left the flux on too long.

Also, I do better with a gel flux. It's thicker and adheres better to the
solder line than a liquid flux.

Like Suzanne, I prefer Gel Flux. My favorite is Glastar GlasFlux.

I use a flux brush (acid brush) and cut the bristles in half so that they
are about 3/8" long. With shorter bristles, the brush picks up less flux
and I don't have too much trouble with over-fluxing. It also helps me tell
the difference between the flux brush and the patina brush which has
full-length bristles.

I don't rinse my flux brush, I just dry it with a paper towel and throw it
away when it gets rusty.

you can get flux brushes really cheaply at harbor freight. home depot
carries them also, not as cheaply. If you rinse them with water after use,
they last a long time.

Lorley: If you think you get too much flux why don't you try using paste
flux. This way you use the brush and only dab it on where you want to
solder. It doesn't run and you won't get too much.

Dear Joyce and Suzanne,

Thank you for you kind words and great tips regarding Glastar's flux. Alot of
people don't know that I have done stained glass for over 30 years, and when I
started paste flux was all we had. I have the scars on my forearms to prove
it; as you know paste flux spits and spatters hot material everywhere.
Secondly, paste flux is so hard to clean up, this can be a real for some foil
projects.

Thank you again,

Dear bubble wrap bungies,

We use cushion foam, I personally don't think it works as well as bubble wrap
but it is less expensive. For those of you that go to trade shows, on the last
day of the show when everyone is packing to leave you can find more bubble wrap
than you can carry and this is where I get mine. It is not in neat little
envelops, however you can cut it to size and it works great! Good Luck.

I am trying to decide which glass saw to put on my
Christmas list from Santa this year. I need your help.

I have early stages of arthritis in my hands. As a
result, using a pistol grip or traditional hand cutter
causes problems for me.

My questions are: Which glass saw do you all like
best and why? Has anyone tried the new Taurus 3 Ring
Saw?

I look forward to hearing your opinions.

Thank you so very much in advance!

Direct Tel No.: 234-803-317-2701,
Efax : 1-501-635-0627
Email: peter_omene@uk2.net

It is my great pleasure to write you this letter on behalf of my
colleagues. Your information was given to me by a member of your country's trade Organization, Who was with the delegation on a trip from your country for a bilateral conference talk to encourage foreign investors during the last World Trade Fair, held in my country. I have decided to seek a confidential co-operation with you in the execution of the deal hereunder for the benefit of all parties and hope you will keep it confidential because of the nature of this business.

Within the Niger Delta Development Commission, where I work as a Director of Contracts and Project Implementation and with the co-operation of two other top officials, we have in our possession an overdue payment in US funds.

The said funds represent certain percentage of the total contract
value executed on behalf of my Department by a foreign contracting firm which we the officials over-invoiced to the amount of US$15.500,000.00 (Fifteen Million Five Hundred Thousand US Dollars). Though the actual contract cost has been paid to the original contractor, leaving the excess balance unclaimed.

Since the present elected commission chairman is determined to pay foreign contractors all debts owed by the commissions last administration, so as to maintain good relationship with foreign governments and non-government agencies, we included our bills for approvals with the Commissions finance department. We are seeking your
assistance to front as beneficiary of the unclaimed funds, since we are not allowed to operate foreign accounts. Details and change of beneficiary information upon application for claim to reflect payment and approvals will be secured on behalf of you/your company.

I have the authority of my partners involved to propose that should
you be willing to assist us in this transaction your share as compensation will be US$4,650,000.00(Four Million, Six Hundred and Fifty United States Dollars) of the total amount, while my colleagues and I shall expect you keep our share of US$10,850,000.00(Ten million, Eight Hundred and Fifty Thousand United States Dollars)which we intend to invest independently, unless we advice otherwise.

The is a completely safe and secure relationship, provided you treat it with utmost confidentiality. It does not matter whether you/your company does contract projects as a transfer of powers will be secured in favor of you/your company. Also, your area of specialization is not a hindrance to the successful execution of this transaction. I have reposed my confidence in you and hope that you will not disappoint
us.

Kindly notify me by either by Telephone, Efax(for confidentiality saske) or email. Tel No.: 234-803-317-2701, for further details upon your acceptance of this proposal.

Thanks for your co-operation.

Regards,

DR. PETER A. OMENE.

I have arthritis in both hands, and also a few years ago I had a cervical
discectomy. You might try looking for a cutters mate rather than a saw. Saws
are expensive, noisy, and very slow. If you need a bandsaw, than I'd suggest
a real one, rather than a ringsaw.

Hi Lynn:

I recently bought a Taurus 3 Ring Saw after much research into various
brands and types of "machines". It has served me well and I am glad I
bought it. Other, more experienced users told me that it is "higher
maintenance" than other saws, but I have yet to come across that. The
instructions for care of the machine are meticulously written.

I am impressed with being able to cut in any direction; as far as safety
is concerned, I like the fact that I am pretty safe from cutting my
fingers -- a burn might be the extent of injury.

Hope this helps,
Janet

Dear Lynne,

I can't help with the saw but I've used the "old" Taurus ring saw and was
impressed.

Just got a catalog from Warner-Crivellaro and one of their new items is a
black, adhesive I think, pistol grip cutter caddy that might help with your
cutting. It wraps around the pistol part. Their phone number is
1-800-523-4242.

Dear Suzanne,

Your Arthritis is easily solved by using a "Cutters Mate", I know you are
going to love it! I know a man that is paralyzed that attached a voice
controlled to his Cutters Mate and still makes lead windows. Regarding your
saw I would recommend a Taursas saw, they are the best and offer exceptional
costumer service.

Thank you for your responses to my first question
about an alternative glass cutting method.

So, what are your opinions on specifically the Taurus
Ring Saw vs the Gryphon Wire Saw? Has anyone tried
both in order to compare?

Thanks!

Yes Sherry, I did receive your e-mail yesterday. My
husband wanted me to ask specifically about those 2
saws. He's a research nut when it comes to purchasing
something. He's really leaning toward the Gryphon
Diamond Wire Saw. A big selling point is the price of
the replacement blades. They're affordable!

Thank you for your input. I really appreciate it.

Lynne and all,

A few years back we had a class store here in Havasu, Az. I was fortunate
enough to be able to try both glass saws before I bought my Taurus.

I much preferred the Taurus because it made a better , straighter cut. It
also makes a wonderful circle cut. With the Gryphon I found I had to do
more grinding to smooth the cuts out.
And the Taurus works well on all types of glass....rippled, bumpy,
globby....without any chipping.

Yes, the blades are expensive.....but if you use your saw correctly and
don't get too antsy about hurrying the cut up....they last for ever. And
just a hint....whatever saw you get ....use plenty of ice cubes in the
water. Those blades do get very hot (and I really believe that is some of
the reason they will break!)

Just MHO, but I hope it can help someone out a little!

Barb

Hi Lynne -

I have used both and my vote is firmly with the Taurus for being a delight
to use.

They both have pros and cons.

PRO: The Gryphon is easy to maintain and the blades are about $7 each. CON:
The reason I don't like the Gryphon is because you must provide a place for
the water to run off. In my store, that means that the Gryphon is always
parked beside the sink.

PRO: The Taurus is easier to use. CON: The blades are $100 and replacing
them isn't a piece of cake. PRO: If you use the saw properly and never
force the material into the blade, they will last a very long time.

Congressional Committee on Energy and Commerce comes out swinging against Diet Drugs targeted to Children, FDA Loopholes used to market Illegal Steroids

STRAFFORD [drugINTEL] - 3 Apr 2003 - The Committee on Energy and Commerce showed no signs of political stupor or regulatory catharsis as it stepped up to take on some of the endemic problems that FTC and FDA have been helpless to deal with. Targeting nutraceuticals touted as Diet Drugs, the Committee on Energy and Commerce has demanded documentation of ingredients and clinical demonstration of safety and efficacy that vendors breezily contend is overwhelming but is never cited.

Members of the Committee on Energy and Commerce requested FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan and the Drug Enforcement Agency to investigate and close loopholes allowing banned steroids to get on the market without needing to obtain FDA approval. Steroid precursors and pro-drugs that will form testosterone-related Illegal Steroids in the body are being sold by companies that were not named in the letters for obvious reasons.

Skinny Pill flouts Congressional Committee on Energy and Commerce Requests

Skinny Pill (see Website) is a name of a company (possibly identical to the Fountain of Youth Group LLC) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, whose president is Edita Kaye. This pill contains a number of mostly diuretic herbal components including Uva ursi, juniper berry, and buchu leaf. Uva ursi is contraindicated in the PDR for children under 12. All cause the body to lose water. Dr. Alison Hoppin, chief of the pediatric obesity clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital, said "Diuretics in children can cause kidney problems and electrolyte imbalances if taken long term." Diuretics are likely to show an artefactual weight loss due to decrease in the amount of water in the body, thus showing immediate changes on the bathroom scale.

"It's absolutely outrageous; "It's not going to help people lose weight. It's junk science," added Keith Ayoob, a pediatric nutritionist and an American Dietetic Association spokesman.

Daniel Mowrey, affiliated with competitor Klein-Becker (possibly identical to Basic Research, both of Provo, Utah - a question Congress wants clarified) makers/distributors of diet drug Anorex (See drugINTEL News 27 Jan 2003) states "On her website Kaye claims that her 'Skinny Pill for Kids' is a 'safe, effective weight loss formula for children ages 6 -12'. However, a review of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) / National Library of Medicine database (PubMed) reveals not one single published clinical trial that has been conducted with anything called the 'Skinny Pill for Kids' or the combination and amount of active ingredients that make up the formula related to weight loss in children ages 6 to 12."

Klein-Becker receives Congressional Request to put cards on the table

The Klein-Becker / Basic Research criticism is apparently a case of the kettle calling the pot black, perhaps because of its competing product, PediaLean, containing an unidentified product "Pediatropin" derived from the P. rivieri root - all shrouded in mystery and scientific-sounding hype. A letter from the Committee on Energy and Commerce points out the deceptive nature of PediaLean advertising and notes the lack of safety or efficacy data. We found no genus to correlate with "P." rivieri, but the plant in question may be Amorphophallus rivieri also known as Konjac Root.

One of the supporters of PediaLean is Nathalie Chevreau, member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Supplement Watch. Opinion: Caution is necessary in weighing the endorsements of "Supplement Watch". A random sampling of the reviews on Nutraceuticals revealed that some valid criticisms were given where appropriate, although it is far from rigorous or comprehensive - for instance, the very important induction of cytochrome oxidases by St. John's wort is not noted, and warnings concerning Ripped Fuel and Ephedra are understated. Despite the HON affiliation, source literature is rarely cited. At least one member of Supplement Watch is listed with a university affiliation, but it turns out that he was only a postdoctoral student at the university. Many of the members do not hold doctorates. Supplement Watch is "internally financed".

You can make a complaint to the FDA regarding Supplements at the link below

I just got back from attending the Hot Glass Horizons glass expo in
Portland. The Tarus 3 was there and the nice advantage of it was the
greater distance between the working surface and the bottom of the blade
houseing. You can saw thicker items on it ie: pattern bars etc. The
older version can only accomodate a couple of thickness. Also came with
the split blade that is optional on the older models, runs much quieter
and it appeared that the saw was removeable making it possible to use as
a hand saw.

Lynne: The Tarus 3 would be great. Also consider the Cutter
s Mate. That requires very little pressure when scoring glass. There is a
Scoremaster that operates much like a sewing maching that would be useful
and only costs about $50.

Pass the word or better yet, go to a local retailer and try out the glass
saws.

Since nobody seemed to post it, here's the web site for the Cutter's Mate..

  http://www.cuttersmate.com/

It works remarkably well, I have tested it myself, but I'll admit that I
don't own one - yet - largely because my hands are still in fairly good
shape! It's the rest of me that's falling apart! (grin)

  Peace -Gerry

Dear
PRAISE ALLAH, THE MOST BENEVOLENT.
I am Mrs Iyesa Ismiana, named person from Kuwait. I am married to Late
Malam Usman Ismiana of blessed memory who worked with Kuwait embassy
in Sudan for nine years before he died in the year
2000.We were married for eleven years without a child. He
died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days. Before his
death we were both very devoted muslims.Since his death I too have been
battling with both cancer and fibroid problems. When my late husband was
alive he deposited the sum of$10.5 Million (Ten Million Five hundred
thousand U.S. Dollars) with an oversea security company. Presently, this
money is still with the Security Company.
Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next three
months due to cancer problem. Though what disturbs me
most is my stroke sickness. Having known my condition I decided to
donate this fund to either a moslem organisation or devoted muslim
individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct
here- in. I want this muslim organisation or individual to use this
money in all sincererity to fund mosques, orphanages, widows and also
propagating the word of ALLAH and to ensure that the society upholds the
views and beliefs of the holy Quran.
The holy Quran emphasized so much on ALLAH'S benevolence and this has
encouraged me to take this bold step. I took this
decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money
and my husband relatives are new Christians converts and I don't want my
husband's hard earned money to be misused by people I call unbelievers.
I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an unholy
manner.
Hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I know that after death
I will be with ALLAH the most beneficient and the most
merciful. I don't need any telephone communication in this regard
because of my health and also the presence of my husband's relatives around
me always.
I don't want them to know about this development. With ALLAH all
things are possible. As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you
the contact of the Security Company. I will also issue you a letter of
authority that will prove you as the original-
beneficiary of this fund. I want you and the Muslim community where you
reside to always pray for me.
My happiness is that I lived a life of a true devoted muslim worthy of
emulation. Whoever that wants to serve the ALLAH must
serve him in truth and in fairness. Please always be prayerful all
through your life. Any delay in your reply will give me room in
sourcing for a muslim organisation or a devoted muslim for this same
purpose.
Until I hear from you, my dreams will rest squarely on your shoulders.
May the almighty ALLAH continue to guide and protect you.
Regards,
Iyesa Ismiana

Hi ZL
We have never found a patina to turn the solder (i assume) a bright brass -
only the so-called Antique shade which doesnt really look lika anything!
If we want a bright brass finish we have it plated.

Hi all. Got a question. Anyone ever fuse glass to porcelain (or
incorporate glass bits into a porcelain base)? I have a client who wants=

to do something like this, but we don't know the COE of porcelain. =

Also...does anyone have a cone to temperature conversion chart? Thanks.

Dear friend,
Greetings to you and your family in the name of God.
In my search for a reliable and God fearing person
and having gotten your contact through a painstaking
search in real estate journals, I have decided to seek
your help in carrying out my last wish for my only
child. My name is Gray Marshel. I'm a 55 years old
man and a British living in Malaysia. I was a merchant
and owned two businesses in Kuala Lumpur. I was also
married with two children. My wife and older child
died in a car accident six years ago. Before this
happened my business and concern for making money was
all I lived for. I never really cared about other
values in life. But since the loss of my family, I
have found a new desire to assist helpless families. I
have been helping orphans in orphanage/ motherless
homes. I have also donated some money for humanitarian
needs in Sudan, South Africa, Cameroon, Brazil, Spain,
Austria, Germany and some Asian countries.
I'm currently in a hospital where I have been
undergoing treatment for oesophageal cancer. I have
since lost my ability to talk and my doctors have told
me that I have only a few months to live. It is my
last wish to invest some funds I have in a deposit
account in Canada in real estate for my son who is
just 13 years old. This is to ensure that his future
is secured as my relatives and friends have plundered
so much of my wealth since I have been hospitalised. I
cannot live with the agony of entrusting this huge
responsibility to any of them. Please, I want you to
assist me in finding a real estate firm that would
undertake this transaction for me. I want you to
closely work with the estate firm to find me a short
listing of some commercial and residential properties
in major urban areas within your locality with great
future potentials of growth. All properties should
include price of listings and final closing cost. For
your role I will expect you to charge a fee; my
recommendation will be 5% for all transactions made.
This is something I would like to resolve quickly
without delays and your early response would be
greatly appreciated.
My regards to you and your family.
Regards,
Gray Marshel

yes, i've done so. actually it was a high fire clay body, fired to 2700.
you'll lose almost all the color of the glass at that temp, as fusing glass
is only tested to 1500. i just used small chips of glass. it didn't craze,
but almost half of the glass went elsewhere (vaporized?). i used yellow
bullseye fusing glass, and it came out mostly black, with just a hint of
yellow green. at a drastically different coe , if you use a lot, it will
craze or have a hard time sticking.

I must have missed you question the first time through. I was cleaning up my
Bungi folder and there it was. Also I saw no other replies. So here goes

Yes I use butyl acetate tape. On my custom doors like the one at
http://www.holtenwood.bc.ca/studios/vmdoor1.htm
The black butyl tape can be seen in the construction detail at
http://www.holtenwood.bc.ca/studios/vmdoor4.htm

The rabitted grooves plus the mosaic applique technique result in a groove
holding the glass which is sometimes less than perfect width. The wood in
such a door can move quite a bit with moisture changes. These doors are
often exterior doors so they do go through significant moisture changes.

I wanted to hold the glass tightly without any sense of looseness or rattle.
Butyl tape meets these requirements while still allowing the wood to move
around the glass without too much stress on the glass. Plus the good seal of
the butyl tape helps prevent moisture leakage between the glass pannels. I
happen to like the black colour in my designs too.

The only preparation for the glass is to make sure it is clean. Oils or wax
on the glass or came will disolve the butyl tape causing smudging and/or
cause it to not stick.

Note: This can actually be used to help mask areas you do not want any
troublesome sticking of the tape. A light coating of wax on the glass, but
not came edging will help remove butyl tape from the glass without any left
behind to smudge later.

Any squeeze out of the butyl from a tight joint can be cleaned up by cutting
it with a sharp knife. Do not use solvents such as mineral spirits. They
will disolve the butyl tape and leave a mess.

If you are finishing the wood with oil or other solvent based finish, best
do it before putting in glass and butyl tape. Again, the solvent in any
finish except a water based one will disolve the butyl and make quite a
mess.

Subject: Installing Transom- Butyl Acetate tape?

Hi everyone. I have a question re installing a transom in an indoor
doorway. The builder wants to use butyl acetate (?) tape for the
installation as the window will be partially open all the time. Does anyone
know anything about this tape and what should be done to prepare the window?
Thanks for your help.
