Do you enjoy a bit of whimsey? (And you don't have to like making it, to
enjoy it.)

Take a look at the cover story on the spring Glass Magazine! Wow!

Also a nice piece which helps make sense of soldering - and shows to me
that a lot of soldering "wisdom" isn't as grounded in reality as we'd
like.

Nope - don't work for them, just appreciating some goodies. - Cec

Hi Cec,
After searching on line through "Glass Magazine" and finding no whimsey in
auto and insulated glass, I realized you meant "Glass Craftsman" with the
cover story on Jackie Hughes fantastical glass structures... seeing it in
person in Las Vegas was even more impressive! Thanks for passing that along.

Yes, of course you are right. What were they like? How big? I took a
look at this year's entries thru round 2, and there's nothing to
compare. Were the other pieces there also? That cat fish house really
tickled me. Were all those in the article done for that contest, or
just (just!!!) the castle? - Cec

Hollander Glass in Houston has Wissmach 310R. Its product code is PW310R=

it? Houston Glass Craft Supply in Houston (different distributor than
Hollander) has WC40CX listed, which is a Light Olive Green Corella Classi=

I had lost my old grozer pliers and purchased a new one last week. This new
one is different. My old pliers had ends that were flat on each side say
like alligator jaws and when closed there was no open space between the
jaws. The new pliers have one flat side and one slightly curved side maybe
like a parrots beak. I found that when using the new pliers the glass piece
does break off at the score line but I tend to shatter the piece that I am
breaking away. Am I using the wrong side, if there is such a thing or am I
squeezing too hard? And wouldn't you know it, the day after I start to use
the new pliers I find the old ones under a piece of paper towel. Lorley

Lorley--

Sounds like you got the combo grozer/breakers instead of just
grozers. When using them, the curved part should be on the
bottom. Fine for breaking, but it's good you found your grozers--I
think they're much better for grozing.

The pliers you bought are called breaker/grozers and do 2 things. Use these
pliers with the round size up for grozing, or nibbling away excess glass.
Turn them over so the flat side is up if you're using them as breaking
pliers to run a cut. I have my beginners put an X on the flat side so it
helps them remember which side to use for what.

why do you want to seal it?

there are lots of sealers available. try going to a tile store and asking
them. it's bound to be a lot cheaper than a specialized product from
glastar. the market is a LOT larger.

please don't send mime email.

Hi All!

It's me again, with this big 6 foot wide x 2 foot high window that I'm
working on... 3 questions:

1)
http://www.wildkitty.com/stglass/index.htm#alpine
(the top one, of the 2 you see)

...after a lot of great advice, I've invested in some strongline, to put in
a few of the big vertical areas (probably up the mountain sides and in the 2
outer-most big vertical curves)... I've never used this stuff before -- do
you just fit the copper-foiled glass edges into it and no solder (?). Not
sure I understand how it stays secured -- will gravity and weight be enough?

2) for panels that will hang in windows (like around 3 feet x 2 feet), I've
tried wooden frames but thought I might do some with other materials -- is
zinc channeling a good way to go? Similar to above, how does that stay
secured? Do you wrap it around and just solder to two meeting edges (or
edges at 4 corners for a square)?

3) is solder with a mix of lead in it better to use than the type with no
lead -- is it stronger over the long-haul?

Thanks again for the help! :0)

Any great tips on making jewelry boxes? This
will be my first real 3d attempt (did a business
card holder once). The box itself will be made
of bevels, with a mirrored bottom. I thought I'd
protect the back of the mirror (bottom of the
box) by foiling it to a piece of extra thin
picture glass and soldering this sandwich into
the bottom. The lid is a dolphin pattern I found
on the web. There's a lot of 'firsts' in this
box for me--first time to use bevels, mirror,
sandwiched glass, ball feet, tube-in-tube hinge,
lid support chain, etc. Finished size will be
something like 8x10x4. I know the basics of box
construction, so I'd like to know if any of you
have learned any neat tricks, tips, etc, or
learned any lessons the hard way. This is a
graduation present for my sister-in-law, who
becomes an MD on May 18th, so I don't really have
time to mess this up! Thanks all for you help!
Sherry

Nice design.

StrongLine fits BETWEEN two copper-foiled pieces. Look at the StrongLine=
. =

It's just a strip of steel which has been clad in brass for soldering. I=
t
has no channel. When you solder the panel, the StrongLine disappears
WITHIN the solder line. You have just enclosed a piece of steel within
your solder line.

BTW, I would run my primary StrongLine reinforcing line starting on the
bottom edge at the left side of the "N", then up the right side of the
left-most mountain, and then out the ray coming off the top of the
mountain. That will give you a continuous StrongLine reinforcement from
bottom to top with only a slight bend. Then I would run another one from=

the bottom up the left side of the "A" and then the left-most mountain,
meeting the other StrongLine at the mountain's peak. I would run four mo=
re
StrongLine strips; one in each of the arches running from bottom to top. =

That should really give you good reinforcement in the piece.

BTW, aren't you going to have a break line between the right-most mountai=
n
peak and the top curve inside the tennis ball? I didn't see one in your
drawing. I'm assuming you are going to put one in, as that would be an
impossible piece otherwise (unless you were plating, but that's another
subject).

I don't like zinc framing. Wooden framing is my preferred method -
especially for something as large as 3 feet x 2 feet.

I only use leaded solder. I mostly use a mixture of 50/50 and 60/40. =

Don't think it makes much of a difference strength-wise. Makes a
tremendous difference during soldering.

i made a mistake in this email. glastar doesn't produce sealers for diamond
crete. some other company does this. it does, however, make good sense to
buy sealers from tile or general purpose hardware stores, if you are going
to use it. same stuff repackaged i would guess.

why do you want to seal it?

there are lots of sealers available. try going to a tile store and asking
them. it's bound to be a lot cheaper than a specialized product from
glastar. the market is a LOT larger.

please don't send mime email.

I've never built a window of that size using copperfoil, nor have I ever
used strongline...so I'll leave those questions to someone who has used
them.
All the *large* panels I've built were leaded...and I use rebar to
reinforce.

As far as zinc came to border a panel, I love it. I have also built a few
panels in all zinc came, and they came out really cool for what the client
wanted.

I read recently that some people dont like using zinc for several reasons,
among them were listed...difficult to patina, and difficult to bend. I do
border almost every panel I build in zinc. (copper foiled or leaded) It is
easily bent with a came bender, you just do it gradually so that you don't
over bend it.

Solder the zinc where ever a solder line meets the zinc.
Remember that your solder lines need to be flat where they will insert into
the zinc channel. To get a nice joint there, if you put your tip on the
zinc, just a little solder, and sort of roll your iron back towards the
solder line, you will get a neat joint without being too big.
(easier demo'd than described)

Zinc has oil on it and usually some oxidation. A lot of times I use a steel
brush on all the joints prior to soldering zinc.

If you clean it (000 or 000 steel wool) and a hot soapy shop rag (wrung out)
it takes patina well. I use one of those envelope licker sticks, take off
the spong and cut off the end. Fill it with patina, then an OB (tampax
disentegrate) tampon. Use a steady hand and in one long pass, patina. If
you are using wider zinc than that covers, then make a second pass with
little to no overlap. If you rub it back and forth, it wont work. Let it
dry, then wipe it with a wet shop rag. After that I use kemopro on the
zinc. Before you use it to patina again, cut the tip of the tampon off with
a razor blade.

I've never used lead free solder, so can't help you there either.

Suzanne

go to my site http://www.geo-cities.com/Paris/1141/ - remove the dash in the

my site has mostly information on boxes and such.

One thing I would never do is sandwich a piece of clear
glass on the silvered side of the mirror. There is a
product called Silver Protector manufactured by Glass
Pro which I use to coat the edge of the glass. What you
want to watch for is using too much flux near the mirror
backing, as this will in time (after 6 months) eat away
the silver backing and give you a black spot usually
near an edge. I learned this the hard way after making a
3 dimensional planter with mirror, only to have some of
the mirror turn black. The trick is to really use the
least amount of flux and wash the project as soon as it
is soldered with any of the commercial flux removers
available. Hope this helps.

I have a question regarding strongline. I have never used it - and I am
wondering...does it add much to the overall size of your piece if you use
quite a bit of it in your design? Seems to me that adding something between
your joints would increase the overall size of your finished piece. Does one
have to take this into consideration when designing?

Yes, you do have to take its slight size into consideration. When I desi=
gn
a piece that's going to use StrongLine, I use a colored highlighter pen t=

trace over the lines where the StrongLine will go. Then I switch over fr=

I love to do suncatchers and I was wondering what your
favorite suncatcher book is? Thanks for your help.

I use a good concrete sealer such as Thompson's or Armorall (sp?). Just
make sure that you let the stone dry out (about 30 days) before sealing or
you will seal the moisture in. Some people don't seal the bottoms, but I
do.

Also try and not get the sealer on the glass or if you do, make sure you get
it wiped off.

Tricia

Has anyone come up with any alternatives for
sealing mirrors? My glass store doesn't open
until Wed, and I need to do this now. Someone
mentioned clear nail polish. How about clear
acrylic spray sealer, the kind that crafters use
to seal their painting, decoupage, etc. Would
that work or does that stuff eat the finish?
Thanks again!
Sherry

All I ever used to use is clear acrylic spray. Now I use Instant Drying
Laquer spray. It has a much more durable finish. I spray the sides and
bottom of the mirror - keeps the bottom protected from scratches on the
mirror finish. Both sprays dry fast. I buy them at Rocky's - it's an Ace
hardware store. Elaine

I've used the Wal-Mart brand and it works great also. Leaves a smooth
professional finish!

Hi

I have been a lurker for a long time, but I need help in finding a
pattern for a clarinet or a music related pattern.

Any ideas as to where I might find a pattern will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Bruce

Bruce

I recently added a saxophone to a panel. I found some great books in the
library that give clear photos of musical isntruments. You can scan one of
those into your computer, turn it into a line drawing then adapt that to a
stained glass pattern. Works great.

Hi Bruce- - -

Another place that I find great pictures for patterns is www.google.com - -
choose the Images search, and see what shows up. From there you can either
convert it to a pattern or just use what you find as is.

You can find some musical staffs and notes in one of the Glass Smith books.

In Judy Miller's Abstracts, there are three men playing a horn of some kind
- an abstract I find attractive.

I'm sure there are more...

Awhile ago, people mentioned using fishing
spinners for hanging windchime components. Just
a note...For those of you who live near one of
the Kmarts that are closing, many stores still
have a good selection of fishing gear left at 50%
off, including several different kinds/sizes of
spinners. I purchased some brass barrel
spinners--a brass wire through a brass barrel
bead and looped/wrapped on each side. Their
pretty attractive and could be tinned/patina'd to
match.

I'm out here, too. Actually, you've been in my thoughts, Christie,
because I've been unenthusiastically working on a lamp which
reminds me of your experience with the pig lamp. Mine is a parrot
lamp. One of my students (I work at a university) commissioned
the thing as a gift for her fiance (who's graduating from medical
school). They have two parrots and she wanted them depicted in
the lamp. Not even colorful birds--mostly green. I'll be glad to be
rid of this one....

Hello All,

I am interested in what techniques people are using for the edges (sides) of mosaic pieces. I just completed a mosaic class and am not thrilled with the technique we were told to use on the edge of the piece. It looks beautiful but seems dangerous to me. I hope I can explain this well enough for you to give me alternatives. <g>

My base is 3/4" plywood with glass and tile work done on the top. The instructor had me face the sides with glass strips cut 7/8" wide, the cut edge of the side pieces of glass are even with the top of the mosaic and it formed a space to be grouted where the sides and the top meet.

Here is my issue...the outer perimeter of the mosaic has sharp upper edges due to the cut edges of the sides being level with the glass and tile surface. I hesitated to grind the glass because it is iridescent and grinding chips off the finish.

Ok, I am aware I used the word edges way too much but I hope you understand and can give me some options.

Thanks in advance.

Those of you with Windows machines - you may have read that the Klez
*virus* has surpassed SirCam which until now had infected the most
machines. For those of us who suffer the blank email problem on Bungi,
you may have noticed we've been getting a number of them recently, and
when you check by viewing the source, all you get is an alphabetic
guff. I suppose those who don't have the blank email problem are simply
seeing messages with the alphaguff. If you've gotten some of these,
your machine is probably infected unless you have a currently updated
anti-virus program.

These messages are being generated by infected machines, and even if
your email is checked and you are told which messages were infected, the
message was NOT generated by the person whose address is show on the
message. Klez pulls email addresses from the infected machine's address
list and forges them in the message. This *virus* is not infecting
corporate machines because by now most businesses are checking for it.
This one is infecting personal, home, and small business machines.

I have a Mac which is immune, and I also have a specially coded email
address that is only used on Bungi, so I can tell that most of these
infected messages that I'm getting are arriving from Bungi.

To that end, I offer you this website which has the links for
downloading a number of *virus* removers - free!!! - Cec

I would also be interested to hear others' comments.

Since I'm self-taught and glass was handy, I've been making my mosaics on
float glass. One of the advantages is that you can draw the pattern onto the
glass, or actually you could work right over a printed pattern.

For edging I've been framing it with zinc or copper. Actually I frame a
piece of glass before I start the mosaic.

Another method is to find old cheap picture frames, or mirrors with frames,
and mosaic right into them.

Personally, I'm plotting summer vacation.

Oh, yeah, just after the next two craft fairs...well, some day I will be
free!

(Of course, I am signing up for fall craft fairs!)

Hi Kaye, Christie, and everyone!

I'm still chuckling over the pig lamp and now the parrot lamp!

With my daughter out of school for summer, I won't be getting much glass
done, but that's life! Glad to see the list moving again.

P.S. Sorry Kaye, I do that every time!~

ah yes, the bungi gang! i'm here as well, working on a glass logo of my
aunt's favorite hockey team for her birthday (next week) so i'm desperately
trying to finish (houston aeros). and then my largest project to date will
come next: an ocean scene with the hms Victory going to her battle of
trafalgar. i'm excited to get started on that one even if it means tons of
different shades of blue. i'm sure i'll hate it by the time i'm finished
working it up! anyway, good to see everyone is still alive and kickin'!!

Hi Pat,

All you have to do is a quick brush with some fine sand or emery paper. Just
one or two quick buffs along the edge and you can't get cut.
Be sure to slide the sandpaper along the edge lengthwise and not up and down
which could cause fine chips (although still not likely). Don't lay the
paper flat on the edge of the glass either, you want the paper to slide on
the sharpest angled edge of the glass, as if you were using the glass to
slice the paper like a knife.

for you to give me alternatives. <g>

My base is 3/4" plywood with glass and tile work done on the top. The
instructor had me face the sides with glass strips cut 7/8" wide, the cut=

edge of the side pieces of glass are even with the top of the mosaic and =
it
formed a space to be grouted where the sides and the top meet.

Here is my issue...the outer perimeter of the mosaic has sharp upper edge=
s
due to the cut edges of the sides being level with the glass and tile
surface. I hesitated to grind the glass because it is iridescent and
grinding chips off the finish.

Ok, I am aware I used the word edges way too much but I hope you understa=
nd
and can give me some options. <

Option 1: (good for next time) Cut the edge pieces slightly smaller and
place them slightly below the top of the form. The grout between the edg=
e
& top will cover all exposed edges.
Option 2: (good for existing work) Get a file and scrape the exposed edge=
s
down. This is very simple. Wear safety goggles when doing this, as you
don't want glass chips getting in your eyes.

I do a lot of both. Repairs to lead pieces mostly, although the

As for doing the same exact thing twice....

Two days ago I shipped out 20 of the exact same panel to a cabinet
business. All brass came too (yuck on your hands).
Got to finish up another order for the same company. This is for 40 of t=

I'm here too! Just been so darn busy making things that I hardly have time
to play on the computer!

If anyone is interested, you can see my latest projects at:

http://www.mmartindesigns.com/newstuff.htm The Gallery page also has some
new stuff. Twin sidelights that were made for a couple in Colorado. They
were kind enough to send a photo of the installed panels!

My new work counters my loving husband made for me are on the newstuff page
also, and were installed in time for Mother's Day! It's hard to see - but
next to my portable workboard, is a built into the counter lightbox. So nice
to have some working room! Now just to get everything organized!

The weather here in NE Wisconsin has finally turned warm - high of 74
predicted for today! And with the slow down at my day job, 90% of us are on
24 hour weeks - so I'm on my way outside to finish foiling my
hummers/flowers panel!! Hopefully I'll be soldering by Sunday.

Hope ya'll are enjoying spring time - a great opportunity to grab some new
ideas for windows!

Must be the "artist" in us that enjoys doing NEW things as opposed to
repetitive. Although as you've stated there are lots of good things to say

is there a health concern in building stained glass bird feeders due to the lead in solder, etc and if so, is there a way to reduce any health concerns for the little birdies?

I am in the process of creating a mosaic bird bath for my garden. I will
still have the beauty of the glass - but no solder to worry about that will
harm the birds.

It is turning out great. I am so anxious to complete it!

Hi Everyone,

I noticed it's been quiet lately. I've just finished a leaded glass class
and starting to layout some replacement doors for the wife's china cabinet.
It seems that the drawing part is taking forever. Been doing a lot of work
outside. It finally got warm here in Erie. Regarding the bird feeders I
agree that the lead free solder is the only kind to use. Some where in my
reading I ran across some candy dishes and it specified lead free only.

Guess you could use lead free solder. Don't know how it holds up when
exposed to the elements!

is there a health concern in building stained glass bird feeders due to the
lead in solder, etc and if so, is there a way to reduce any health concerns
for the little birdies?
