I haven't worked much with them, but when I did, I found that temperature did factor into the quality of the finish, it seemed to me, that when the item (lamps are what I was working on) were warmed up a bit, things worked smoother, and I got a better, more consistent finish. Just remember that these verde finishes, are just a fast and controllable means of putting an oxidation finish on the copper, brass.. or whatever.. and as such, you've got to make sure that the surfaces are dead bang clean before you begin.. fingerprints, areas of flux residue, etc.. play hob with the end result. You can putty the panel, then have it electroplated. But I foun= d that the electroplating process turned the putty a funny yellow color. = Must have electroplated the microscopic bits of lead which leach into the= putty. So, I assemble the panel, solder hanging loops to the panel, have= it electroplated, clip off the loops, and then finish the puttying/cleaning. The whole point of electroplating for me is to hide t= he solder joints inside the electroplating, so that all metal surfaces are exactly the same. Consequently, the answer to your question is "Yes", yo= u can use the same patina on all the metal. Christie A. It would cycle from normal hot to downright cold (could hold solder to the tip for a minute or more without a hint of melting) as I soldered. Really frustrating and added a lot of time to the project. The problem got worse as time went on. Pretty soon it was cold as much as it was hot. Finally complained to Weller, who happily took the iron back, determined that it was defective, and sent me a brand new one. They were very polite and prompt about it all, and I haven't had that problem since, with my new iron, which I've had over a year now. I've heard of one or two other people having the same problem with their Weller irons. I guess the internal temp control has a high infant mortality rate--IF it gets through the first year or so, it'll last forever. If none of the other list suggestions help, talk to the manufacturer. If it's a defect or failure in the product, they are usually quite happy to make it right for you. You may only buy 5 soldering irons in your entire life, but every company wants to make sure it's their's that you buy the next time! So customer service it usually good with these companies. Hello All:

I signed up for a beginners stained glass class that = starts=20 soon. I know I said I would never attempt to make stained glass, = but the=20 temptation to try it is just to great.

Each student will have to complete a SG window to=20 graduate.  So I want to make a 18.5 " x 12.5" stained glass sundial = window=20 using a design I made for a window in my studio.  I've already = tested a=20 working prototype that I made from a printed version on paper.  I = taped the=20 paper to the inside of the window and made a gnomon (shadow caster) out = of=20 cardboard and a bamboo teriyaki stick and taped it to the outside of the = window=20 and it works great.

But I made my design without regard to the width of = the lead=20 that joins the pieces of glass together. I used black lines in my = drawing to=20 represent the lead.  But I just drew what looked good to me, = without any=20 regard to the correct actual width of the lead.  I would like to = redraw it=20 to show the correct lead width.  I'm guessing that the lead is = about 1/4=20 inch wide, but this is just a guess.

Is there a standard lead width that I should use in = my=20 drawings?

Thanks

John

Hello All: I signed up for a beginners stained glass class that starts soon. I know I said I would never attempt to make stained glass, but the temptation to try it is just to great. Each student will have to complete a SG window to graduate. So I want to make a 18.5 " x 12.5" stained glass sundial window using a design I made for a window in my studio. I've already tested a working prototype that I made from a printed version on paper. I taped the paper to the inside of the window and made a gnomon (shadow caster) out of cardboard and a bamboo teriyaki stick and taped it to the outside of the window and it works great. But I made my design without regard to the width of the lead that joins the pieces of glass together. I used black lines in my drawing to represent the lead. But I just drew what looked good to me, without any regard to the correct actual width of the lead. I would like to redraw it to show the correct lead width. I'm guessing that the lead is about 1/4 inch wide, but this is just a guess. Is there a standard lead width that I should use in my drawings? Thanks John p.s. if anybody wants to see my drawing, let me know and I'll send you a jpeg (~150kb) John L. Carmichael Jr. 925 E. However some of my customers have used Edco from the start as whoever taught them used it so we stock that too and sell it to committed Edco users although the price of Edco foil is between 30-50 percent more expensive in UK. Another difference from the USA/Canada is that we can only get the purple-core Masterfoil over here so cant offer different thicknesses of foil, only different widths. As to how long it lasts, we often discover old half-used packets and have found no particular difficulty with it not sticking. Also I have one part-used roll of 3/8" foil that must be over 10 years old but is still useable the very few times I want to use it in a project. The Pro Max and Gryphon have a lot of power; the Gryphon has the most. The Gryphon is unusual in that the water source is located in a tower above the grinding head. After it runs over the head, it flows to a reservoir below the grid and then out through a tube into a container on the floor (don't forget the container!). What's good about this grinder is the water is always clean. The water tower is very obvious and it only takes a glance to see when you need to refill. The motor is extremely strong. The Pro Max is designed to take two grinding bits at once so you can put a 1/4 inch bit for drilling holes above the 1 inch bit. That's kind of nice too. The Glastar grinders are decent machines. Don't know if this helps.
